MAGNESIUM AVAILABILITY

The availability of Magnesium from pasture is more often a problem than is simple magnesium deficiency in the pasture. Antagonists in fresh green feed such as high Potassium, Soluble Protein and Cis and Trans Aconitic Acid reduce the availability of magnesium from both the digestive tract and from the bodies reserves NB. the Skeleton contains 2% Magnesium which represents over 70% of the bodies reserves.

Low sodium levels lead to very poor transport across the wall of the rumen the major site for absorption of magnesium. This combined with low blood Calcium and the presence of the antagonists predisposes cattle to a rapid fall in Magnesium levels in the fluid surrounding the brain and the spinal cord (cerebro spinal fluid) resulting in nervous symptoms and in some cases Grass Tetany (hypomagnesaemia). The animals most at risk are mature cows in good body condition and either pregnant or lactating.

The inclusion of Magnesium with salt and the anionic salts in a palatable carrier such as molasses ensures cattle will accept these otherwise unpalatable but essential nutrients in reducing risk of Grass Tetany. Molafos GT supplies the necessary magnesium as well as salt to correct the sodium to potassium ratio, which is necessary for the absorption of magnesium from the rumen. The anionic salts help improve blood calcium and magnesium levels by stimulating the animal to mobilize these minerals from their bones.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Pour into open troughs and allow cattle free access. Feed out 3 days supply and do not refill until the 4^th day. Once intake has stabilised feed out 7 days supply, refill as necessary to ensure constant availability. Additional Salt may be added to reduce intake commencing with 3kg/ 100 litres.

INTAKE

Cattle: 1 to 3 kilograms / head / day

1 litre Molafos = 1.32 kilograms

FEEDING TIPS

Once green winter grass dominant feed is available Molafos GT can be fed out in open troughs or tubs at a rate of 2 tubs for the first 50 head and thereafter 1 extra tub for each additional 50 head. It is a good idea to place some tubs close to areas where cattle will shelter during cold inclement weather to ensure they have access to the supplement at high risk times. For areas which experience intakes outside the maximum recommended intake the addition of salt to the product will help reduce intakes. Commence by adding 3kg of fine salt per 100 litres of Molafos GT. This may only be necessary for one to two weeks to appease any salt craving, thereafter intakes often settle back to recommended levels.

OTHER PRODUCTS

• For cattle coming up to calving with green feed available it is advisable to change over to Molafos Transition for the last 2 weeks of pregnancy. This has benefits in improving calcium metabolism, and reducing the incidence of many of the metabolic diseases that occur at or near calving.
• For sheep the same product is used for the above reasons and because of the benefits in lamb survival and subsequent growth associated with Vitamin E supplementation of the ewe for 30 days pre lambing.
• For green pasture the recommendation is to switch to Molafos M a mineral rich molasses based green feed / production feeding supplement.
• For cattle on lighter country Molafos 15NQ with much higher phosphorus and mineral levels is recommended.
• For grain assisting in the paddock or full feeding in a feedlot the Molafos feedlot products for cattle and for sheep become the products of choice.
